La Ventana Classic and KiteXpo Canceled for 2013, Will Return in 2014 PDF Print E-mail
The Kiteboarder Magazine
Monday, 17 September 2012 18:39

Eight years ago founder Tim Hatler and a few locals thought it would be cool to see if they could kiteboard the

11 miles from Isla Cerralvo to La Ventana. Now known as The La Ventana Classic and KiteXpo and Paddle Royale, the crossing has grown into one of the most anticipated events in North America attracting participants from all corners of the globe for a week of pro clinics, new gear demos, competitions, and nightly parties. Thanks to riders, the local community, and the windsurf, kite, and stand up paddleboard industries, this annual event has helped raise $97,808.50 of which 100% has been used for projects that directly benefit the local schools and community.

For 2013 there will be no La Ventana Classic as the event is taking a step back to prepare for an awesome 2014. In the meantime, plans are in the works to create a Kite Demo and Pro Clinic week with participating brands at host properties in La Ventana during the week of January 14, 2013. So far we have received confirmations from Liquid Force, Ozone Kites, Axis Kiteboarding (Adrian Roper formerly from Underground), RRD, Mystic, Xenon, Werner Paddles and Airush. Stay tuned to www.thekiteboarder.com and www.facebook.com/thekiteboardermagazine for more info.

TKB is also offering several very unique and different trips to Baja in Jan/Feb 2013. From testing gear to swimming with whales to helping us find a new route for the 2014 Classic Crossing, check out the adventures at http://www.thekiteboarder.com/baja/

Patri McLaughlin and Ninja Bichler Win KSP Mauritius PDF Print E-mail
The Kiteboarder Magazine
Sunday, 16 September 2012 13:02

Epic conditions graced day nine of the holding period for tour stop number two of four at the One Eye Kite Surf Pro.  The women’s final saw a repeat victory from local ripper Ninja Bichler (GER, North), dominating her home break. The men’s side saw underdog Patri McLaughlin (HI, North) take down reigning world champion Airton Cozzolino (ITA, North) nailing the only perfect 10 of the competition in the dying moments of the final.

In the marquee matchup of the day, the men’s final promised to be the best heat of the event and it did not disappoint.  The powerful Cozzolino was pitted against the barrel-hunting McLaughlin in a final that saw several lead changes and some of the best tube rides of the event.  McLaughlin got off to a great start with an opening wave score of 6.83 to Cozzolino’s 4.5.  However, Cozzolino answered back with an 8.5 to give him the lead at the midpoint of the final.

McLaughlin’s never-say-die attitude finally paid off in the final moments of the heat with the event title on the line.  Pulling into a seemingly un-makeable barrel, McLaughlin emerged claiming the first 10-point ride of the competition. Cozzolino scored a 7.5 late in the heat, but was unable to overtake McLaughlin for the title of the One Eye Kite Surf Pro.

“I’m so stoked right now I don’t even know what to say”, said the overwhelmed McLaughlin. “I got the biggest closeout barrel of my life in that final, and I am just so happy to be here.”

The men’s 3rd place final featured Luke McGillewie (RSA, RRD) against Sebastian Ribeiro (BRA) in a battle that saw the momentum of the young McGillewie finally stopped by the powerful, flowing backside riding of the on-fire Brazilian.

On the women’s side, the much-anticipated battle between the local knowledge of Bichler and the hotshot riding of Jalou Langeree (NED, Naish) was a nail biter right down to the wire. In the end, Bichler’s superior wave selection proved to be the difference in a final that highlighted her relationship with the intricacies of the break at One Eye.

“I felt more pressure this year trying to defend my title, but I was able to catch some good waves and felt in tune with the ocean today. I am just so happy to win the event again here at my home spot in front of my local crew,” said Bichler.

Following the completion of the main event, the 6-heat Expression Session began in exceptional conditions.  Mauricio Pedreira (BRA), Milla Ferreira (BRA), and local rider Max Bonieux (MRU) won top honors for best barrel rides in their respective categories.

Final Results of the One Eye Kite Surf Pro:

Men’s Final:
1-Patri McLaughlin (HI, North) 17.67
2-Airton Cozzolino (ITA, North) 16.00
Men’s 3rd Place Final:
3-Sebastian Ribeiro (BRA) 13.67
4-Luke McGillewie (RSA,RRD) 10.57

Women’s Final:
1-Ninja Bichler (GER, North) 17.00
2-Jalou Langeree (NED, Naish) 11.53
Women’s 3rd Place Final:
3-Kirsty Jones (GBR, North) 12.24
4-Ines Correia (POR, RRD) 12.23

PKRA Fuerteventura – Big Winds for the End of Freestyle PDF Print E-mail
The Kiteboarder Magazine
Friday, 03 August 2012 23:52

The fourth day at the Fuerteventura World Cup offered up a myriad of exciting heats and nail-biting action as the top competitors of this competition so far battled it out on the water for the ultimate title of world champion.

With lighter wind, measuring  22-30 knots at the start of the day, the location provided different challenges for riders who had been battling with huge gusts and strong winds in the days prior.

Beginning with the women’s heat featuring Gisela Pulido (ESP) and Annabel Van Westerop (ARU), Pulido pulled out a nice Blind Judge 3 right away, scoring 5.17.

Racking up the points quickly, Pulido obviously had her head in the game, eventually beating out Van Westerop, who did manage to throw a nice Blind Judge 3, among other tricks.

Next up came the match-up between the two strong competitors, Kevin Langeree (NED) and Marc Jacobs (NZ). Kevin started off with an advantage, scoring a 7.02 S3, while Jacobs pulled in some high scores as well with a 7.77 Late Back Mobe.

From then on, it was a battle of the biggest, as each rider went huge and fast. Langeree pulled in high scores for his Front Mobe and Back Mobe, but eventually lost out to the slightly higher scores that Jacobs was able to achieve at the end of the heat, such as from his Slim and Front Mobe.

With only a few heats left, the men and women continued to exchange turns back and forth, allowing the winner of each previous heat to take a quick break before the next on-water battle.

The wind dropped considerably in the next heat between Pulido and her adversary from the singles, Wiktoria Rosinka (POL), which Pulido won. Jacobs then went head to head with Alberto Rondina (ITA) in Rondina’s first heat of the day. In lighter, yet suitable wind, both riders put up their 9-meters in 20 to 27 knot winds. From the start, this was a very close heat.

Jacobs put the highest scores on the board first with a Late Back Mobe and Blind Judge 3, while Rondina came into his high scores at the end with a 6.0 Back Mobe and 5.80 Shifty 5. In the end, Rondina simply executed more tricks with better scoring, which lead to his advancement in this heat.

The familiar female adversaries, Bruna Kajiya and Gisela Pulido also competed in an intense heat. Kajiya however, seemed to go into her tricks a bit faster and with more power, and eventually executed more tricks then Pulido with a KGB, 313, and Blind Judge 3.  In the following heat, Bruna continued to advance against Asia Litwin (POL).

Many could tell that Kajiya was giving it her all, and her riding certainly reflected her determination and focus as she kept her kite low throughout her tricks and rode very powered. Rondina, on the other hand, did not continue once he was matched up with Pastor. In fact, Pastor put together one of his most solid heats so far, which included a 7.33 Slim.

His early lead turned into a sizeable point spread by the end to take the win and continue on against Youri Zoon (NED).

In time, the women’s final commenced with a concentrated Karolina Winkowska (POL) and the already warmed up Kajiya. Both competitors rode extremely well, and this turned out to be the highest scoring women’s heat of the entire event.

Bruna opened up with a solid S1, while Karolina also hit a nice S1 (switch) and Blind Judge 3. Karolina in particular seemed to excel in the conditions at hand, and eventually, this won her the heat and the championship title. She proved consistent, strong, and powerful in her riding, putting forth her best moves with amazing execution.

For her, this was her very first, first place podium win, and very much deserved considering her amazing heats throughout the event. In accepting her awards and congratulations, Winkowska revealed, “I fought with all my mind and strength to win this heat. Fuerteventura is such a great place, always with blue water and lots of wind, so I am really so happy to have won this event.”

Finally, in the most anticipated heats of the day, Youri Zoon and Alex Pastor fought for the first place title with everything they had. Pastor, having just finished one of the best heats so far was likely amped with adrenaline, yet the single elimination winner, Zoon, needed only to win the first final to win the championship.

In this first final, Pastor threw down the biggest score of the entire competition, with a Slim 7, which scored a huge 8.57. And while Youri answered back with many amazing tricks, such as a powered 313, Alex kept his kite low and appeared more comfortable riding in the conditions at hand. Thus, Pastor won this final with the highest score of the day (48.1), prompting the super final where the winner would take all.

This last heat was incredibly close and lacked absolutely nothing in amazement or incredulity. Massive tricks were thrown one after the other from each competitor, and it became quite clear that neither rider was ready to give up any time soon. Alex’s best trick proved to be a Double S1, while Youri’s highest score came from a Late Back Mobe.

In the final moments, Pastor edged into the lead and stayed there until the ending horn sounded. Speaking later of his win, Pastor gushed excitement, saying “I didn’t expect to beat Youri the second time around, but he is a great competitor and I had to just try my hardest. This is my first time winning in Fuerteventura and I am really happy. I can’t describe how good I feel.”

The two winners and the second and third podium placers ended their day on stage inside the giant event tent with huge applause and big congratulations. Looking elated over their wins and also relieved to have finished competing in such challenging conditions, the competitors recognized once again the amazing event that has brought them all to this place, year after year – never failing to provide a great time.

After the awards ceremony for the freestyle, the PKRA Airstyle single eliminations commenced with top riders such as Kevin Langeree, Reno Romeu, and Sebastian Garat (FRA) taking part in this fun, yet challenging discipline.  Nils Wesch (GER) achieved the biggest reaction from the beach with his huge handle pass that landed in a crash, while Tack completed the most well-received double handle pass. Eventually, Garat and Pulido won the single eliminations, putting them in prime placement for tomorrow’s doubles.

Tomorrow, double eliminations of the PKRA Airstyle competition will bring the Fuerteventura World Cup to a close after an eventful and action-packed five days here in the Canary Islands.

PKRA Turkey Wrap Up: Heineken, Bridge, and Langeree Finish On Top PDF Print E-mail
The Kiteboarder Magazine
Sunday, 01 July 2012 19:52

Authors: Paul

Original Article: PKRA Turkey Wrap Up: Heineken, Bridge, and Langeree Finish On Top

The last day of the Burn Kiteboard World Tour played out exactly as a final day should. The culmination of the entire event erupted in anticipation and excitement, as racers and freestyle competitors arrived at Burc Beach one last time, ready to give it their all.

Contributing to this eagerness was the tight point tally between the competition’s top racers – specifically John Heineken (USA), who entered the day with 10.4 points, Bryan Lake (USA) with 10.1, and Adam Koch with 10.4. This equated to one of the closest world championship racing competitions in all of kiteboarding history

The first race of the day stood out as possibly the best race of the entire competition so far. The new course provided tactical challenges that made not only for good racing, but excellent spectating as well. In fact, Olivier Dansin (FRA) commented that the course was the perfect combination of fun and strategic racing.

Interestingly, the windward mark proved to be the most difficult to make in each race. On the first attempt, Riccardo Leccese (COL) and Heineken took the most effective lines and broke ahead of the fleet. Around the second mark, Leccese took a strong lead and Lake fell behind as he attempted additional tacks. On his 15-meter, Leccese finished first as Koch pulled into second place in the last moments of the final lap.

The tenth official race drove the total points scores even closer, leaving spectators on the beach standing in anticipation of what was to come. At this point, many commented that this was racing at its finest. Some kites moved in perfect synchronization alongside one another, while others moved back and ahead in search of the perfect lay line.

Heineken rounded the difficult windward mark first, while Lake’s strategies didn’t seem to work quite as well as he hoped. With the fleet on bigger kites, they all took insights from the initial race, hoping that this would benefit them the second time around. Heineken, Lake, and Leccese crossed the finish line first (respectively).

Steph Bridge (GBR) also returned to competition after a daylong trip to cross the English Channel. Successful in her goals, she returned and still managed to achieve top placement in each race. Nuria Goma (ESP) earned a consistent second, while locals Merve Ceylan and Bilge Ozturk (TUR) moved in and out of third place throughout the day.

Finally, race 11 turned out to be the most intense of them all, Heineken, Koch, Lake, and Leccese went into battle with the look of sheer determination and commitment. The biggest question was whether Lake or Heineken would achieve the championship title – and the next 30 minutes would be the ultimate deciding factor.

From the start, Lake and Koch took a very different approach than the rest of the fleet; however, Leccese and Heineken rounded the first mark ahead of the rest. Olivier Dansin (FRA) gladly pulled into third, leaving Koch and Lake to fight for third and fourth place.  Riccardo eventually came flying across the finish – Heineken in second and Dansin in third.

Even though this was Leccese’s second win of the day, it was not quite enough to put him on the podium. Heineken, Lake, and Koch, on the other hand, came out on top, claiming the championship titles for the event.

Commenting on his racing experience, top Turkish racer – Salih Alexander Cakir – expressed his excitement about racing with the PKRA, saying, “It was an amazing experience racing for the first time with this world tour and seeing how I measured against the best racers on the planet. I hope to make it to more stops in the future and plan on representing my country in the Olympics as well.”

Heineken also explained that it was a very up and down day, saying that the close point difference really put the pressure on in the toughest races of the week.

The freestyle Kite Master’s final heats also attracted a large crowd, as Kevin Langeree and Ariel Corniel first took to the water and displayed a mix of Board-offs, KGBs, and 313s. In 12-15 knots of wind on their 12 and 14 meter kites, the conditions were well suited to decide the final winners of the Burn Kiteboard World Tour.

Langeree moved into the final, as did Christophe Tack, who advanced with big 7.5 Back Mobe and a nicely executed Board Flip (TicTak).  In the final, featuring Tack and Langeree, Kevin achieved big scores with nothing below a 6.5, including a Late Mobe and Board-Off, while Tack pulled off a powered KGB and Board-off as well.  In the end Langeree achieved victory with his mix of crowd-pleasing old school tricks and well-executed new school maneuvers.

All in all, the Burn Kiteboard World Tour proved to be a giant success, filled with incredible racing and outstanding freestyle action. As a first time tour stop for the PKRA World Tour, competitors and spectators certainly hope for a return visit to beautiful Turkey in 2013.
